DSM-V and Chronic Pain

January 17, 2013

I’ve heard about something troubling… The DSM-V is supposed to be released this year & there are some not-so-great things about it.  The one that impacts us the most is this:  The wording related to “Somatic Symptom Disorder” could lead docs to diagnose people with chronic pain (and other chronic illnesses) with a mental disorder!  This is disastrous in many ways.  The obvious problem is misdiagnosis.  This will make it easier for doctors to dismiss real medical problems as “all in your head” and could potentially lead to people not receiving the treatment they need.  I have been alerted to two articles, one of which was written by a psychologist in “Psychology Today.”  Please read these articles and be aware of what is going on in the medical and psychological realms!  We need to be proactive in protecting our rights as patients.  Maybe if everyone is aware of what is coming down the pike, we can raise the awareness of society as a whole.  Living with chronic pain & all the emotions that come with it doesn’t mean we’re crazy!
